So today I’m going to answer the question, what is the best weed control or weed killer for the lawn? I get asked that all the time, so I figured I might as well write this post. So before we go any further though, I want you to know I only recommend using concentrated weed control mixed into a hand can sprayer and spot sprayed or zone sprayed across the lawn. I don’t recommend blanket weed and feed or blanket liquid treatments for weed control. I want you to do what’s best for the environment. We call that integrated pest management, and that involves concentrates.
Now with that in mind, it’s not necessarily the brand of weed control that matters, but it’s what the weed control is made up of or what the active ingredients are, for lack of a better word. So with that, let’s look at the active ingredients that you should be looking for when you choose a concentrated weed control. Let’s show you how to find the active ingredients in your weed control. It’s always going to be on the front panel at the lower left or lower right. That’s where you’re going to find your active ingredients, and the number one active ingredient that you want to look for that’s going to control most broadleaf weeds the quickest is 2, 4-D. Looks like two commas, four dashes D. 2, 4-D. Now, if you want to be able to kill crabgrass and some other types of grassy weeds that have emerged, then you’re going to want one that’s also Quinclorac.
Now, Quinclorac, what that’ll do is it’s going to mostly control crabgrass that’s not past the second tiller stage. So if you’re at the end of summer and you have very, very mature crabgrass, the Quinclorac’s probably not going to do much to it. But if you have missed your pre-emergent or something’s gotten away from you around the edges, Quinclorac is another active ingredient you want to look for in your weed control. With those two, you’re going to be able to control most of the weeds out there. Some of the tougher ones, Creeping Charlie, also called ground ivy, those may not be able to be controlled with these types of homeowner products. But for the most part, that’s what you want to look for.
So I hope this tip helped you. What is the best weed control to use? Get out there, be safe, wear your safety equipment and get those weeds gone.
